Justice and Public Policy Major

A student who struggled all through high school to make the grades, with a self professed poor test taking ability, Will Turner faced many challenges. His mother was diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis, and his father was incarcerated, but Will's faith helped him through these trying times.

What started as a desire to leave a mark on the school that he loved, blossomed into an opportunity to change young lives in Milwaukee. Will, a student at Concordia University Wisconsin, is determined to help.

Will began work with a nonprofit business called MindStar Community. This small, community-based, outpatient mental health clinic also offers youth support services, such as tutoring. They serve children and adults ages three years and above, with a variety of mental health and social needs. MindStar Communities is located in the heart of Milwaukee’s urban community, with tailored services catering to the needs of each client.

While thinking back to conversations with the Defensive Coordinator, Adam Walker, Will realized what a man of character was, and learned lessons about life that he had missed. He realized that he was lucky. Will could have easily slipped through the cracks and become the opposite of what he is today. This propelled him to take on the challenge of helping kids who came from a place of pain and trouble that Will knew himself.
